Mahindra has signed a ₹2,700 crore contract with the Indian Army to supply 1,986 Scorpio Pik-Ups. This is not the first time Mahindra has collaborated with the Army. With this new deal, Mahindra will have supplied over 4,000 vehicles to the Indian Armed Forces, including models like Scorpio Pik-Ups, Scorpio Classic, Scorpio N, and Bolero Pik-Up 4WD. In total, the Army will have over 7,000 Mahindra Scorpio SUVs in its fleet.

About the Mahindra Scorpio Pik-Up

The Scorpio Pik-Up has been spotted on Indian roads during testing multiple times. However, it is not available for civilians in India. Mahindra exports this model to South Africa and Australia, where it is quite popular.

The upcoming Scorpio N-based Pik-Up was seen during testing and features a Scorpio N-like front design with a single-cab structure. In the past, a dual-cab version was also showcased. It is unclear if the Army will get single-cab, dual-cab, or both versions.

Mahindra will make special modifications to meet the Army’s requirements. For example, the vehicle may not have alloy wheels and instead use steel rims. It will be painted in Army Green and will have a roll bar that extends above the roof to protect the cabin in case of a rollover accident.

Since these vehicles are meant for the Army, they will only be available in 4×4 versions. While Mahindra offers both petrol and diesel engines in the Scorpio N, the Army will receive only the diesel variant. The interiors may also be simplified to accommodate military equipment. The Army has yet to decide whether to opt for a manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Apart from Mahindra, the Army will also be inducting 2,978 Force Gurkha SUVs into its fleet.

Scorpio Pik-Up Features & Engine Details

Mahindra already sells the Scorpio Pik-Up in international markets, and the Scorpio N-based Pik-Up is expected to launch there soon.

The civilian version of the Scorpio Pik-Up will include premium features like:

  • Leatherette seats
  • Digital instrument cluster
  • 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Automatic climate control
  • Sunroof

Mahindra may also offer Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) and trailer sway control, though ADAS is unlikely in the Army version.

The Scorpio N Pik-Up will be powered by the same engines as the Scorpio N SUV:

  1. 2.0L Turbocharged Petrol Engine (200 BHP, 380 Nm torque)
  2. 2.2L mHawk Turbocharged Diesel Engine (172 BHP, 400 Nm torque)

Both engines come with manual and automatic transmission options, but only the diesel version gets 4×4 capability.

Mahindra is unlikely to launch the Scorpio N Pik-Up in India for civilians, as this type of vehicle has not gained much popularity in the country.
