India has launched its first AI-powered smart traffic management system on the Dwarka Expressway in Delhi. This project, called the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), is part of a bigger plan to build intelligent and safer highways, following the latest rules by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Where Is It Implemented?
The ATMS has been installed along:

- Dwarka Expressway
- A 28-kilometre stretch of NH-48, from Shiv Murti to Kherki Daula
In total, the system covers 56.46 kilometres.
Who Developed It?
The system was developed by Indian Highways Management Company Ltd (IHMCL) and is being managed by NHAI.
What Does the System Do?
The AI-based system helps monitor traffic and improve road safety. Some key features include:
- 110 high-resolution cameras installed every 1 km for 24×7 monitoring
- Video detection systems to identify traffic rule violations like:
- Not wearing seatbelts
- Triple riding on two-wheelers
- Over-speeding
- Speed display boards that show your vehicle’s speed in real time
- Electronic signboards that give important messages to drivers
- Central control room to manage traffic and send help quickly during emergencies like accidents, fog, roadblocks, or animals on the road
The system connects with the E-challan portal to report traffic violations directly to the police. It’s a big step in using technology for safer roads, making travel smoother, faster, and more secure.
This project is now being seen as a national model for future AI-driven traffic systems across India.
