
In response to the tragic Air India Flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, which claimed 260 lives (including 19 people on the ground), the Tata Group has announced major relief efforts for victims and their families.
Tata Sons and Tata Trusts have created a special ₹500 crore welfare trust called “The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust”. This fund will support the families of those who died, people who were injured, and others affected by the accident.

Key Points:
- The trust will give ₹1 crore as ex gratia compensation to the families of each person who died.
- It will also cover full medical treatment for those seriously injured.
- The trust will help rebuild the B J Medical College Hostel, which was damaged in the crash.
- Support will also be given to first responders, doctors, disaster teams, social workers, and government staff who helped during the emergency and may be dealing with trauma.

About the Trust:
- The trust is being registered in Mumbai and will be managed by a board of five trustees.
- So far, two trustees have been named: S. Padmanabhan, a former Tata executive, and Sidharth Sharma, General Counsel at Tata Sons.
- ₹250 crore will come from Tata Sons and ₹250 crore from Tata Trusts.
The trust will officially begin working after completing all registration and tax-related processes.
This step by Tata Group is seen as a strong commitment to supporting those affected by one of India’s worst aviation disasters in recent history.
