Air India has announced that it will stop flights from Delhi to Washington DC starting September 1.

The airline said this decision is because of several operational reasons. They want to make sure all their other flight routes work well and stay reliable.

The main reason for stopping these flights is a shortage of airplanes. Air India is currently upgrading 26 of its Boeing 787-8 planes to improve passenger comfort. This upgrading process started last month and will take a long time — at least until the end of 2026.

Because many planes will be unavailable during this upgrade, Air India needs to pause some flights, including the Delhi-Washington DC route. Another challenge is the ongoing closure of airspace over Pakistan, which affects long-distance flights.

So, to keep its overall flight services running smoothly, Air India decided to temporarily stop flights between Delhi and Washington DC.
