
Ajay Kumar, the former Defence Secretary of India, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), as per an official order from the Union Personnel Ministry.
This position became available after Preeti Sudan completed her term on April 29. Ajay Kumar’s appointment was approved by President Droupadi Murmu.

He is a retired IAS officer from the 1985 batch of the Kerala cadre. He served as the Defence Secretary from August 23, 2019, to October 31, 2022.
The UPSC is responsible for conducting exams to select top government officers for services like IAS, IFS, and IPS. It is led by a Chairman and can have up to 10 members. Currently, there are two member positions vacant.
The UPSC Chairman is appointed for six years or until they turn 65 years old, whichever comes first.
