India’s biggest telecom player, Jio, has launched something fresh — JioPC, a service that turns your regular TV into a working desktop computer. All you need is a Jio set-top box, a keyboard, and a mouse. Just like that, your TV becomes a personal computer.

This service is cloud-based, which means the heavy work happens online. You don’t need expensive hardware or a fancy laptop. Once you get access through the free trial (currently on a waitlist), you can start using apps, browsing the web, and even typing documents — all on your TV screen.

What Is JioPC?

JioPC is a virtual desktop that runs through the internet. It comes with office tools like LibreOffice, which works like Microsoft Word or Excel. Even though Microsoft apps don’t run directly, you can still use them through the web browser.

It’s designed for simple day-to-day tasks — like online classes, typing, browsing, or learning online. You don’t need a high-end device or deep tech knowledge. Just plug in the set-top box, connect your mouse and keyboard, and go.

Who Is It For?

JioPC is mainly for homes that have a TV but no computer. That’s a huge number — nearly 70% of Indian homes have a TV, but only 15% own a computer. That’s where Jio sees a big chance.

For students in small towns, families on a budget, or anyone who just wants to get online without spending a lot — JioPC can be a game-changer.

How Much Does It Cost?

Right now, it’s free on trial, but only through invites. The set-top box comes free with some JioFiber plans. You can also buy it for ₹5,499. That’s still much cheaper than buying a laptop or desktop.

What Can You Do With It?

  • Open documents
  • Watch videos
  • Browse the internet
  • Attend online classes
  • Use basic AI features (coming soon)

But it does have a few limits. Devices like printers and cameras don’t work yet. Some apps only run through the browser. So, it’s not for heavy work, but perfect for basic needs.

Why It Matters

This move isn’t just about tech. It’s about access. It’s about giving people in rural and low-income homes the power of a PC — without the cost. And with Jio’s reach (over 488 million users), this could be massive.

Also, with more people moving from cable to streaming, JioPC is a smart way to keep users on its platform.
