Veteran actor Aanjjan Srivastav recently spoke about a difficult time in Amitabh Bachchan’s life when the superstar faced a major financial crisis during the late 1980s and 1990s.
Trouble After Politics
After leaving films for a while to join politics, Amitabh got caught up in the Bofors scandal in 1987. This controversy led him to resign from politics and created big problems in his career and finances.

Bank Trouble and a Promise
Aanjjan, who worked with a bank at the time, said that the bank was worried about the money Bachchan owed. They requested Aanjjan to talk to him directly. Aanjjan recalled visiting Amitabh at Kamalistan Studios with the bank manager. When they met, Amitabh folded his hands and said, “Main aapke ek ek paise vapas kar dunga” (I will return every single rupee I owe you).
And he kept his promise — he repaid the entire loan.
Jaya Bachchan Stood by Him
The bank also asked that Jaya Bachchan, his wife, be made the guarantor for the loan. She immediately agreed and signed the papers without any hesitation.
Cheated by His Own People
In an earlier interview, Aanjjan also said that Amitabh’s company, ABCL (Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd) was struggling due to poor financial management. He believed that Amitabh was being misled by his own team, who were handling the money.
When the bank thought about taking legal action against him, Aanjjan personally stepped in to help. He shared how he and his bank manager would go to Amitabh’s office and noticed that people around him were not being honest.
A Man of His Word
Despite the difficulties, Amitabh Bachchan stood true to his word and paid off all his debts. His honesty and determination during such a tough phase were praised by Aanjjan Srivastav.
