The BCCI is swimming in money. In the financial year 2023-24, the Board of Control for Cricket in India earned a massive ₹9,741.7 crore. Out of this, the IPL alone contributed ₹5,761 crore, making up 59% of the total revenue.
It’s no secret anymore. The Indian Premier League has become the golden goose for Indian cricket. This cash-rich T20 tournament is not just entertainment; it’s a full-blown money machine.

A report by The Hindu Business Line, quoting Rediffusion, confirmed these huge numbers. According to business strategist Lloyd Mathias, the IPL has changed Indian cricket forever. “IPL is the best. Media rights are going up every year. It gives Ranji-level players a platform. It’s going to keep growing,” he said.
BCCI Is Still Sitting on a Goldmine
But here’s the twist. While the IPL is booming, the BCCI hasn’t tapped the full potential of its non-IPL properties. From media rights for India’s international matches, the BCCI made only ₹361 crore.
That’s a small slice of the pie compared to IPL numbers. According to Sandeep Goyal, Chief of Rediffusion, the BCCI can do much more. He says the board should now focus on monetising tournaments like the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and CK Nayudu Trophy.
“BCCI has close to ₹30,000 crore in reserves,” Goyal pointed out. “Even the interest from this reserve gives them ₹1,000 crore per year. If they push sponsorships, media deals, and ticket sales, their total revenue can grow 10–12% every year,” he added.
Even the ICC Needs BCCI
The story doesn’t end there. The report also revealed something big – the ICC depends on the BCCI for funds. While the global cricket body struggles to raise money, the BCCI is thriving. That says a lot about where the real power in cricket lies.
The BCCI is not just running Indian cricket. It’s running the show for world cricket. With the IPL turning into a gold mine and more opportunities in sight, the board can keep growing its money game. But to stay on top, it must also give attention to red-ball cricket and smaller tournaments. The future of Indian cricket depends on how BCCI balances its power and money.
