In a recent podcast episode, Zerodha CEO Nikhil Kamath had a candid conversation with Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and well-known philanthropist. The episode is part of Nikhil Kamath’s podcast series called ‘People by WTF’, and the second part was released on YouTube on April 11.
During the podcast, Kamath pointed out that Bill Gates always seems to be in a hurry when he visits India. He asked Gates if he is hard on himself and why he is always busy meeting politicians and attending various events.

In response, Bill Gates said, “It is a lot of fun. But yes, if you want to work hard and not fool yourself, you have to be pretty hard on yourself.”
Bill Gates has visited India many times and met leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ministers JP Nadda, Hardeep Singh Puri, and Jitendra Singh. His latest visit to India was in March this year.

Later in the podcast, Kamath asked Bill Gates whether a large population is a benefit or a problem from a capitalist point of view. Gates replied that with the progress of artificial intelligence (AI), many things will change in the next 20 years. He believes that AI will help people save time and may allow them to work less or retire early.
“You could retire early, work shorter weeks. But we’ll need to think deeply about how to spend that extra time,” Bill Gates explained.
When asked what people would do if they didn’t need to work, Gates shared, “I don’t have to work. I choose to work.” He even suggested that retiring at 40 might become normal in the future. However, he also said that imagining a world where people never need to work feels very unusual to him.
Nikhil Kamath added that people might create a new kind of system to measure success, different from today’s work-based structure.
Bill Gates also spoke about equality and said that complete sameness, like in pure communism, doesn’t come naturally to humans.
Finally, Kamath asked about Gates’ philanthropy — why he chooses to make money but also gives it away. Gates responded with insights into his belief in giving back and how it fits with his goals. He was also the first guest when the podcast launched last year and spoke about his strong bond with India and the great people he works with here.
