The BJP has strongly distanced itself from controversial comments made by two of its Members of Parliament (MPs), Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma, against the Supreme Court.

What Happened?

Nishikant Dubey, an MP from Godda in Jharkhand, said the Supreme Court is “responsible for starting religious conflicts in the country” and claimed that the court is “crossing its limits.” He also questioned the need for Parliament and State Assemblies if everything must go to the Supreme Court.

Another BJP MP, Dinesh Sharma, said that according to the Constitution, “no one can give directions to the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha” (India’s two Houses of Parliament).

BJP’s Response

BJP President JP Nadda made it clear that the party does not support these statements. He said,

“These are personal opinions of the MPs. The BJP does not agree with or support such comments. We completely reject them.”

Nadda added that he has told the MPs, and everyone in the party, not to make such statements again. He also said that the judiciary is a key part of Indian democracy, and the BJP has always respected the courts, including the Supreme Court.

Why Are These Comments Being Made?

These remarks come shortly after the Supreme Court ruled against Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi’s decision to block 10 bills. The court said his actions were “illegal and arbitrary.” It gave a three-month deadline for the President and Governors to approve bills passed by state assemblies.

The comments also come as the Supreme Court is hearing a case on the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The Centre recently told the court that it would not take any controversial steps related to the Act, such as removing the “Waqf-by-user” provision or adding non-Muslims to the Waqf Board.

Congress Reacts

The Congress party strongly criticized the BJP MPs’ comments. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said:

“The Supreme Court is being targeted. There’s a pattern here – whether it’s about electoral bonds, the Waqf Act, or the Election Commission – efforts are being made to weaken the court.”
