In an unexpected twist, the BJP has signaled its support for a nationwide caste census. After years of resisting or remaining neutral, the party’s shift has sparked a political firestorm.

Is this a genuine change in policy or a calculated political maneuver to outsmart the opposition? The timing, especially with the upcoming Bihar elections, makes it an even bigger question mark.

The Caste Census Conundrum: A Divisive Issue

The concept of a caste census isn’t new. Past socio-economic and caste censuses have been conducted, but the nationwide enumeration of castes remains a delicate and contentious issue.

Supporters argue that accurate caste data is essential for creating fair policies that ensure marginalized communities get the welfare benefits they deserve. On the flip side, critics fear it could deepen caste divisions and exacerbate vote-bank politics, fueling more societal fractures.

The BJP, which has historically avoided caste-based policies to maintain a broad Hindu identity, has long been cautious about embracing the idea.

Their reluctance stems from a desire to unite voters under a common cause, rather than risk alienating any specific caste group. Yet, the winds seem to be shifting.

RaGa’s Caste Census Push: A Threat to Congress’s Strategy?

For the Congress party, pushing for a caste census has been a key part of their strategy to appeal to underrepresented OBC (Other Backward Classes) communities.

Rahul Gandhi, or RaGa as he’s often called, has championed the idea in an effort to portray Congress as the advocate of social justice. With caste-based politics playing a major role in many states, especially Bihar, this has been a cornerstone of their electoral strategy.

But now that the BJP has indicated support for a caste census, the Congress’s tactic may lose its punch.

If the BJP successfully co-opts this issue, Congress could see its edge in upcoming elections diminish. In particular, Bihar—home to a complex caste dynamic—will be a key battleground, and any shift in the caste census debate could impact the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), a Congress ally.

Bihar Elections: A Critical Factor

Bihar, with its intricate web of caste affiliations, could see major political shifts if the caste census becomes a focal point. The RJD, a party that relies heavily on OBC votes, could find itself in a bind.

If the BJP presents itself as the party of social justice by backing the caste census, it could erode the support base of both Congress and RJD, setting the stage for a surprising outcome.

Decoding BJP’s Shift: Pragmatic or Sincere?

What’s behind the BJP’s sudden nod to the caste census? There are several possible reasons:

  • Political Pragmatism: The BJP might have realized that opposing the caste census entirely could alienate a key section of voters, particularly in states with large OBC populations. By embracing it, they could present themselves as a party that cares about social justice while retaining their broader base.
  • Defusing Opposition Momentum: By adopting the caste census agenda, the BJP could steal the thunder from Congress and other opposition parties, preventing them from using it as a rallying point for social justice.
  • Targeted Welfare Schemes: The BJP might genuinely believe that caste data could help refine their welfare programs. This would fit into their broader narrative of inclusive development, often encapsulated by their slogan “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.”
  • Internal Factions: It’s also possible that internal divisions within the BJP led to this shift. Some factions may support the caste census as a way to ensure social justice, while others might view it with skepticism. The current move could be a balancing act within the party.

Is a U-Turn on the Horizon?

As of now, it’s unclear whether this is a genuine commitment or merely a tactical shift. The next few months will reveal more about the BJP’s true intentions.

The specifics of the caste census—how it’s implemented and what policies follow—will shed light on whether this is a genuine move or a mere political play. Regardless, the debate over the caste census is far from over, and its long-term impact on Indian politics will be profound.
