The Cabinet just gave the green light to a major investment in India’s clean energy future. On July 16, the Union Cabinet approved a Rs 20,000 crore investment by NTPC in renewable energy. This decision is seen as a big step in making electricity more reliable and greener for the whole country.
At the same time, the Cabinet also approved a Rs 7,000 crore investment by NLC India in renewables.
This move is not just about money. It’s about vision. India is aiming to hit 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030. NTPC, India’s biggest power utility, has committed to add 60 GW of renewable capacity by 2032. That’s a bold promise, and this new Cabinet decision is a solid push in that direction.
At 2:45 pm on July 16, the markets reacted with confidence. NTPC Green shares were up nearly 2%, trading at Rs 112.15. NLC India shares were up 3.65%, trading at Rs 283.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a higher delegation of financial powers to NTPC. This means NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), the group’s renewable arm, can now invest more freely in its projects. The earlier limit was Rs 7,500 crore. It’s now increased to Rs 20,000 crore.

This change will allow NGEL to grow faster, build more solar and wind plants, and enter more joint ventures. NGEL already has a renewable portfolio of 32 GW. That includes 6 GW already running, 17 GW under contract, and 9 GW in the pipeline.
The plan is simple: go big, go green, and go now.
NGEL works mainly through its own subsidiary NREL. It also has partnerships with state governments and other public companies to grow its clean energy game across India. This new power from the Cabinet will speed things up.
The government said this decision will help improve India’s power network and make sure every home and business has 24/7 electricity. And not just any electricity—clean, renewable power.
This also links to India’s long-term climate goals. The country wants to reach Net Zero emissions by 2070. Moves like this by the Cabinet show that it’s not just talk—things are happening.
This is the energy of New India.
