A woman from the US, who lives between North Carolina and the US Virgin Islands, says ChatGPT helped save her life after doctors failed to find the real cause of her health problems.
Misdiagnosed by Doctors
Lauren Bannon, 40, started losing weight quickly and had severe stomach pain. She went to several doctors, but they told her she had rheumatoid arthritis or acid reflux. However, she felt their answers didn’t explain her symptoms.

“They just wanted to give me medicine and send me home,” Lauren said. “I needed real answers because I knew something was seriously wrong.”
Turning to ChatGPT
Desperate to find the truth, Lauren turned to ChatGPT, which she already used for work. She typed in her symptoms, and the AI suggested she might have Hashimoto’s disease, a thyroid condition. It even recommended a specific test – to check her thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO) levels.
Although her doctor didn’t think it was necessary—saying there was no family history—Lauren insisted. The test results showed ChatGPT was right.

The Shocking Discovery
Thanks to this discovery, Lauren got scans of her thyroid. Doctors found two small lumps in her neck, which turned out to be cancer.
“If I hadn’t used ChatGPT, I would’ve just taken arthritis medication and the cancer could have spread,” she said. “It truly saved my life.”
A Warning and Encouragement
Lauren feels lucky that the cancer was found early. She now encourages others to use tools like ChatGPT for health research—but with care.
“Always talk to your doctor,” she said, “but if ChatGPT gives you something new to explore, don’t ignore it. It might help you like it helped me.”
