Danes Remove American Flags From Tattoos as Europe Boycotts U.S. Travel

Would you cancel your dream vacation over politics? Thousands of Europeans are—and the US tourism industry is feeling the heat.

Why Europeans Are Rethinking US Trips

After years of enjoying vacations in the US, many Europeans are now saying “no thanks”—and it’s all because of President Trump. From his controversial meetings to stricter border policies, travelers are voting with their wallets.

Kennet Brask, a Danish tourist, loved his Florida fishing trip but canceled his return after watching Trump’s heated exchange with Ukraine’s leader. “He doesn’t act like a grown-up,” Brask said. Instead, he’s heading to Mexico.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

  • Visitor numbers from Western Europe dropped 1% in February, with Slovenia seeing a 26% plunge.
  • Denmark’s US arrivals fell 6%, while Germany saw a 9% decline.
  • Travel agencies report fewer searches for US trips, pushing them to promote other destinations like Canada.

Greenland Controversy Hits Hard

Trump’s suggestion to buy Greenland offended Danes, leading some to boycott the US entirely. Kim Kugel Sorenson even removed the stars and stripes from his tattoo!

Where Are They Going Instead?

  • Canada is booming as Germans see it as a political statement.
  • Mexico is gaining popularity for its beaches and warmer welcome.
  • Europe is also benefiting, with Canadians booking 32% more summer stays.

Will the US Tourism Industry Bounce Back?

While some companies like TUI still expect strong US travel, others, like Albatros Travel, have stopped marketing US tours entirely. With stricter border checks and political tensions, the trend may continue.
