Delhi Government’s Mahila Samman Yojana: A New Era of Financial Empowerment for Women

The Delhi government Mahila Samman Yojana has taken a significant leap forward under the leadership of Chief Minister-designate Rekha Gupta. On February 20, 2025, Gupta announced that women in Delhi will begin receiving ₹2,500 per month as part of the BJP government’s financial aid program, with the first installment scheduled for March 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day.

What is the Mahila Samman Yojana?

The Mahila Samman Yojana was initially introduced by the AAP government, offering ₹1,000 monthly to eligible women over 18 years old. However, the BJP government has rebranded it as the Mahila Samridhi Yojana, significantly increasing the financial assistance to ₹2,500 per month313. This initiative aims to empower women economically, ensuring they have the means to meet their basic needs and improve their quality of life.

Key Features of the Scheme

  1. Increased Financial Assistance: The monthly aid has been raised from ₹1,000 to ₹2,500, marking a 150% increase.
  2. Direct Bank Transfers: Funds will be directly credited to beneficiaries’ bank accounts, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
  3. Eligibility: Women must be permanent residents of Delhi, aged 18 or above, and possess a valid voter ID card.
  4. Additional Benefits: The scheme also includes subsidies on LPG cylinders, nutritional kits for pregnant women, and financial support for daughters’ weddings.

Implementation and Challenges

The first cabinet meeting of the new Delhi government, held on February 20, approved the proposal for this financial aid. However, questions remain about the funding and enrollment process. With an estimated 40 lakh eligible women, the annual expenditure could reach ₹15,000 crore, a significant increase from the previous ₹6,000 crore allocation.
