
Heavy rains and thunderstorms hit Delhi on Wednesday evening (May 21, 2025), leading to tragic incidents across the city. Two people lost their lives, and at least 11 others were injured in different rain-related accidents.

What Happened ?
- Electric Pole Collapse: Around 7:50 p.m., a strong storm caused a high-beam electric pole to fall near the Lodhi Road flyover, close to the Nizamuddin area. A man with a disability who was passing by on a tricycle was hit by the pole. He was taken to Safdarjung Hospital but was declared dead. Police are working to identify him.
- Tree Falls on Youth: In another incident at around 8:15 p.m., a tree fell in Gokulpuri, northeast Delhi. It landed on a young man named Azhar (22 years old) and two motorcycles. Azhar, who lived in Maujpur, was taken to GTB Hospital but sadly didn’t survive.
- Footbridge Collapse: Around the same time, a part of an old foot overbridge grill collapsed near Mukherjee Nagar, injuring at least six people. The Delhi Fire Service received the report at 8:11 p.m.
- Falling Trees Across City: Social media was filled with videos and photos showing trees crashing down on vehicles. One tree even fell on a parked car on Mathura Road.

Flight Disruptions at Delhi Airport
The bad weather also caused problems at Indira Gandhi International Airport:
- 13 Flights Diverted: A total of 13 flights had to be diverted — 12 to Jaipur and 1 international flight to Mumbai.
- Airlines like IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet posted updates warning that flights might be delayed or diverted due to the weather.
- The airport operator, Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), said that flights could be delayed and road travel to the airport might be affected because of heavy rain. They assured passengers that their teams are working hard to manage the situation.
