Tesla CEO and X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk recently responded to a social media post that raised doubts about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s trustworthiness.

What Happened?

An X user named Ashutosh Shrivastava (@ai_for_success) posted a video showing a major shift in OpenAI’s mission—from a non-profit organization to a for-profit company. The video included older clips of Sam Altman and OpenAI president Greg Brockman speaking about OpenAI’s original goals of helping humanity, not making money.

But the video also pointed out recent changes in OpenAI’s structure, such as:

  • Turning into a for-profit company
  • Removing limits on how much investors can earn
  • Attracting more investments by changing its AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) policies
  • Possibly increasing Altman’s wealth by $10.5 billion, according to Business Insider (Sept 25, 2024)

The post asked, “Can we really trust Sam Altman or OpenAI with AGI?”

Elon Musk Reacts

Elon Musk saw the post and replied with a simple emoji: 🤨 (face with raised eyebrow), which shows doubt or suspicion.

Musk has publicly criticized Sam Altman before. In fact, he has sarcastically called him “Scam Altman.” He once posted a video clip from Altman’s 2023 testimony in the US Senate, where Altman said he didn’t own any equity in OpenAI and only wanted to help people. Musk captioned the video with the nickname “Scam Altman,” suggesting he doesn’t believe Altman’s claims.

Why It Matters

OpenAI was created to build artificial intelligence that benefits everyone. But recent changes suggest it’s now focused on making money and attracting big investors, which raises concerns about whether its original mission still stands. Musk’s reaction reflects growing public debate over whether powerful AI tools should be controlled by profit-driven companies.
