Elon Musk is the richest person in the world with a net worth of $409 billion, according to Forbes. But despite his wealth, he doesn’t live like a typical billionaire. The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX avoids spending money on things like big houses, luxury cars, or fancy food.

In 2020, Elon tweeted: “I am selling almost all physical possessions. Will own no house.” He believes that having too many possessions can hold you back. On a podcast with Joe Rogan, he said, “Possessions kind of weigh you down.”

Here are five things Musk has said he will never own:

1. No Big Mansions

Between 2020 and 2021, Elon sold seven homes in California worth about $100 million. He then moved into a very small Boxabl house near the SpaceX site in Texas. This house is only 375 square feet—even smaller than some small apartments.

2. Living on $1 a Day

When Elon was 17 and starting out, he tested if he could survive on just $1 a day for food. In an interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson, he said he ate simple fast food and used the rest of his money to build his business. He wanted to prove that it was possible to live very simply in America.

3. No Permanent Home

Even today, Elon often doesn’t stay in one place. In a 2022 TED Talk, he said, “I don’t even own a place right now. I’m literally staying at friends’ places.” Even Google’s co-founder Larry Page said that Musk would sometimes stay at his home.

4. No Expensive Furniture

Elon’s former partner Grimes told Vanity Fair that Elon doesn’t live like a billionaire. She said they stayed in a $40,000 house with no security, and the mattress had a hole in it. Instead of buying a new one, Musk simply said they could just “switch sides.”

5. No Luxury Cars Anymore

Elon once bought a McLaren F1 car worth $1 million, but he crashed it while showing it off. He said, “Watch this,” before losing control of the car. It wasn’t even insured. After that, he never replaced it and now mostly drives Tesla cars.

Even though Elon Musk is incredibly rich, he chooses to live a very simple life. He doesn’t care about showing off his wealth. Instead, he focuses on his work, ideas, and future goals.
