Elon Musk’s Starlink is all set to bring its satellite internet services to India. The exciting part? Plans could cost as low as Rs. 850 per month — a fraction of the $80 (around Rs. 6,800) price tag in the US. This could shake up internet access in India, especially in remote and rural areas where connectivity remains a challenge.
What Does Starlink’s Entry Mean for You?
If you live outside the usual wired internet zones, this news is great. Starlink uses a network of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to deliver fast, low-latency internet virtually anywhere. That means even the most distant villages could get online without waiting for cables or fiber optics.

At roughly Rs. 850 per month during initial offers, Starlink aims to make its satellite broadband affordable. For context, typical wired broadband plans in India often cost more for similar speeds, especially in rural areas.
Starlink’s Regulatory Hurdles and Pricing Details
Starlink recently got a green light from India’s Department of Telecommunication (DoT) through a Letter of Intent. However, the journey isn’t smooth. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recommended extra charges: an additional Rs. 500 monthly user fee in urban areas and steep licensing costs — like 4% of adjusted gross revenue and an 8% licensing fee.
These fees make satellite internet services pricier on paper than regular broadband. But Starlink hopes to offset these costs by scaling rapidly to 10 million users. Bigger volume means better cost sharing and, ideally, cheaper plans.

What Is Starlink and How Does It Work?
Starlink is a service from Elon Musk’s SpaceX that provides internet using a constellation of about 4,000 small satellites orbiting the Earth just 550 km above us. Unlike traditional internet that relies on cables, Starlink beams signals from satellites directly to a dish at your home.
In the US, customers pay $80 per month for the “Residential Lite” plan, plus a one-time $349 fee for the Starlink hardware kit. The Indian pricing at Rs. 850 per month, if true, will be one of the cheapest in the world for satellite internet.
For most Indians stuck with slow or unreliable internet, Starlink could be a game changer. It promises not only speed but also coverage in places where wired networks don’t reach. Imagine streaming, working, and gaming without interruptions — even in the middle of nowhere.
But here’s the kicker: satellite internet might still face competition from India’s expanding 5G and fiber broadband networks. The real test will be if Starlink can keep prices low enough and service reliable to win hearts.
