
A fierce encounter is ongoing between security forces and terrorists in the Awantipora area of Jammu and Kashmir. A joint team of the Indian Army and local police launched a search operation in Tral, South Kashmir, following specific information about terrorist presence.

The gunfight started in the Nader and Tral areas of Awantipora. Kashmir Police confirmed the operation on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the police and army are actively engaged.

This is the second major encounter in the region within 48 hours.
Just two days earlier, on May 13, three terrorists were killed during another encounter in Shopian. That operation had started in Kulgam and later moved to a nearby forest in Shopian. Security forces acted on an intelligence tip-off and intercepted the terrorists.
The Indian Army also posted on X that a Rashtriya Rifles unit had received specific intelligence about terrorist movement in the Shoekal Keller area of Shopian. A “search and destroy” operation was launched, leading to a heavy exchange of gunfire and the killing of three terrorists. The operation is still ongoing.

Recently, Jammu and Kashmir has seen a rise in anti-terror operations, especially after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. In response, on May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This military action increased tensions between India and Pakistan.

On May 10, both countries agreed to a ceasefire, promising to stop all military actions on land, air, and sea from 5 PM that day. However, Pakistan reportedly violated the agreement within hours.
Security forces remain on high alert, and search operations are continuing in various areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
