Sterlite Tech has clinched a massive ₹2,631 crore contract from BSNL as part of the BharatNet initiative. The deal falls under Package 13 of the government’s rural broadband push. STL, in partnership with Dilip Buildcon, will design, supply, install, and maintain a fiber optic network across two telecom circles.

The project will take three years to build and ten years to maintain. For the first five years, STL will receive 5.5% of the capital cost annually. For the next five years, the fee rises to 6.5%.

So, what does this mean for the average Indian?

If you’re living in a village still stuck with 2G or zero internet, this could change your life. Faster broadband means better access to online education, telemedicine, and digital payments. It’s not just about faster Netflix—it’s about real empowerment in rural India.

Behind the scenes: STL’s big shift

This project will eventually be handled by STL Networks, a new entity formed after Sterlite Tech demerged its Global Services Business. The demerger takes effect on 31 March 2025, as approved by the NCLT in Mumbai.

Sterlite Technologies is no small player. It’s a global leader in digital and optical networking, with deep roots in building 5G, FTTx, rural broadband, enterprise, and data center infrastructure. This BSNL deal is another feather in its already fiber-rich cap.

A quiet revolution—without the headlines

While everyone’s watching flashy AI demos and shiny new smartphones, this rural broadband project is doing the real work—bringing the internet to places forgotten by the tech hype machine.

Sterlite Tech isn’t just laying cable—it’s laying the groundwork for a digital future that includes everyone.

Wait, wasn’t this supposed to be government work?

Exactly. That’s the irony. For all the noise about “Digital India,” the execution often falls on companies like STL that can actually build and maintain these massive infrastructures. The government plans, STL delivers.
