Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has revealed exciting plans to completely change how people travel in India. In an interview, he shared that the government is focusing on eco-friendly and high-tech transportation systems like electric buses, ropeways, and even hyperloop trains.
Key Highlights:
1. Electric and Smart Transport Systems:
Gadkari said India is working on modern and clean transport options to cut pollution, save fuel, and improve travel. Some of the major plans include:

- Electric rapid mass transport systems that run fast like airplanes.
- Hyperloop technology (super-fast trains inside vacuum tubes) for cities like Delhi and Bengaluru.
- Metrino pod taxis (small driverless vehicles on elevated tracks).
- Cable-run electric buses are also being planned.
2. Ropeways for Hilly Areas:
About 360 ropeway and funicular railway projects are in the pipeline for hilly regions like Kedarnath. Out of these, work on 60 projects has already started. These will help make travel in remote mountain areas safe and smooth.

3. High-Speed Electric Buses:
In Nagpur, new 135-seater electric buses will soon be tested. These buses will:
- Have AC and comfortable seating.
- Run at speeds of 120-125 km/hr.
- Recharge in 30-40 minutes.
- Be used for routes like Delhi-Jaipur and Mumbai-Pune later.
4. Better Roads and Highways:
Gadkari aims to build 100 km of highways per day. Since 2014, India’s highway network has grown from 91,287 km to 1,46,204 km. High-speed roads have also expanded from 93 km to 2,474 km.
New techniques are being used like:
- Precast construction for faster work.
- AI-based monitoring to ensure quality.
- 3-foot-high road barriers for safety.
The government also plans to plant 20-25 crore trees along highways and create a tree bank in collaboration with the environment ministry.
5. Green Fuel & Vehicles:
Companies like Tata, Toyota, Hyundai, and Mahindra will start making flex-fuel cars, which run on ethanol or methanol—a cleaner alternative to petrol and diesel.
This change will:
- Cut down air pollution (which is nearly 40% from transport).
- Reduce India’s huge fuel import costs (around ₹22 lakh crore).
- Help make India a net energy exporter in the next 6-7 years.
6. Lower Logistics Costs:
By improving roads and using green energy, Gadkari hopes to bring logistics costs down from 14% to 9% of the GDP by the end of the year.
India is entering a new era of transportation. With electric vehicles, better roads, and green fuels, the future of travel looks faster, cleaner, and smarter—making life better for people across the country.
