Google has reportedly cut funding for more than 200 organizations, including over 50 groups that focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). This information comes from a new report by a tech watchdog group called the Tech Transparency Project (TTP).
The report says that Google removed 214 groups from its public list of top funding recipients and added 101 new ones. Most of the removed groups—58 in total—were related to DEI. These organizations had missions that mentioned terms like “diversity,” “equity,” “inclusion,” “race,” “activism,” and “women.”

TTP pointed out that the Trump administration has advised federal agencies to avoid these kinds of terms, which may have influenced this change.

What Google Says
A Google spokesperson, Jose Castaneda, told that the list only shows contributions made by one team in 2024 and doesn’t include funding from other parts of the company.
He explained:
“We support hundreds of groups across the political spectrum and update the list each year based on where we think our support can make the biggest difference.”
Why Google Is Cutting DEI Funding
Google has been slowly stepping back from its DEI efforts over the past few years. The main reasons include:
- Cost-cutting, as the company focuses more on AI investments
- A changing political climate, especially after new anti-DEI policies were introduced
DEI and the Trump Administration
In January, President Donald Trump signed an order to stop all DEI programs in the government. It also told federal agencies to challenge what it called “illegal” DEI efforts in the private sector.
Soon after, Google’s head of human resources, Fiona Cicconi, said the company would stop using DEI-related hiring goals to follow the new rules.
Despite these changes, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said during a company meeting in March that diversity is still important:
“We’re a global company with users around the world. To serve them well, we need a workforce that reflects that diversity.”
