Ektaa Kapoor has finally spoken up after the Indian government banned ALTT and 24 other OTT platforms for showing vulgar and obscene content. But she’s not taking the hit for it. In a bold statement, Ektaa Kapoor made it clear that she and her mother, Shobha Kapoor, have no connection to ALTT anymore.
In fact, they walked away way back in June 2021.

What Happened?
The Ministry of Electronics and IT recently blocked 25 OTT apps. The list includes names like ULLU, Desiflix, Big Shots App, Boomex and yes, ALTT.
Why?
Officials said these platforms were streaming content that was vulgar, sexually explicit, or offensive. These apps were found to be breaking Indian laws, and the government decided to shut them down for the public good.
Ektaa’s Clarification
Soon after news of the ban hit headlines, people started linking Ektaa Kapoor to the ALTT controversy. But she didn’t stay quiet. She posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying:
To Whomsoever It May Concern pic.twitter.com/nKgKhldtbj
— Ektaa R Kapoor (@EktaaRKapoor) July 25, 2025
“Me and my mother, Mrs. Shobha Kapoor, are not associated with ALTT in any way. We stepped down in June 2021. Any claim otherwise is false.”
She also said that Balaji Telefilms, the company she runs, is a professional media organisation. It’s listed on BSE and NSE and works under strict corporate rules.
Who Runs ALTT Now?
Ektaa shared that after a recent legal change approved by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), ALT Digital Media merged back into Balaji Telefilms. As of June 20, 2025, Balaji officially operates ALTT.
But again, Ektaa Kapoor says she’s not part of ALTT anymore.
So if people are trying to blame her for the kind of content on ALTT now, she’s saying—don’t.
What’s Next for OTT in India?
The OTT space in India is booming, but with that comes more scrutiny. The government seems serious about cleaning up the digital space.
As for Ektaa, she’s made her position clear. She’s proud of her work, but she won’t own content she didn’t create or approve.
