Gujarat bridge collapse has once again shaken public faith in the state’s infrastructure. On Wednesday morning, a part of the Gambhira bridge over the Mahisagar river collapsed in Padra, Gujarat. This bridge connected Vadodara to Anand and was built in 1985.
As the bridge gave way, several vehicles, including a truck and a few cars, plunged into the river. So far, three people have died, and five have been rescued. Rescue teams are still working at the site, searching for more victims.

Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel confirmed the incident. He said the bridge had been maintained regularly but still collapsed. “The bridge was built in 1985. It connected Saurashtra and Central Gujarat. Around five vehicles have fallen into the river. Three lives have been lost. We had been doing regular repairs, but this accident still happened,” he stated.
Sharing a video of the collapsed bridge, the Congress party posted on X (formerly Twitter): “In Vadodara, Gujarat, the Gambhira Bridge broke in the middle. Vehicles fell into the river. Some people died, and many got injured. We pray for the injured and send condolences to the families.”
LIVES LOST as yet another bridge collapses in Gujarat. From Morbi to Vadodara, how many more tragedies before accountability is ensured, @Bhupendrapbjp?
Is this the much-celebrated “Gujarat Model” that PM @narendramodi continues to champion?

This is not the first time Gujarat’s infrastructure has failed. In 2022, over 140 people died when a newly-renovated suspension bridge in Morbi collapsed. That too had raised serious questions about government oversight and contractor accountability.
Meanwhile, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel is holding a Cabinet meeting in Gandhinagar. The meeting is mainly to discuss the damage caused by heavy rainfall. However, the Gambhira bridge collapse is also expected to be discussed, especially after the public outrage.
People on the ground are angry. “They say they are doing regular maintenance. But if that’s true, why did the bridge fall like this? Who is responsible?” a local resident asked.
