In Indian cinema, few films are remembered as fondly as Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and released in 1999, the film starred Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Ajay Devgn. It wasn’t just a love story – it was an emotional journey full of passion, sacrifice, and beautiful visuals. Now, as the film celebrates its 26th anniversary, Bhansali opens up about what made it so special.

Bhansali calls Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam his “gentlest film”, saying it has a special innocence in the way the romance is shown. After his first film Khamoshi: The Musical didn’t do well, he wanted to create something pure and true to his vision. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was that film — made without any compromises.

He shared that with Khamoshi, he had to change the ending to a happy one because of pressure from distributors. But with Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, he didn’t back down and stuck to his original ending. He hints there’s more to that story — but for another time.

Talking about Aishwarya Rai, Bhansali said she was the perfect choice for the role of Nandini, exactly how he had imagined the character. He praised her performance and how she fit perfectly into his vision for the film.

When asked about the chemistry between Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai, Bhansali said, “Yes, there was love in the air.” But it wasn’t just between them — there was a warm, family-like atmosphere on set with everyone, including senior actors like Zohra Sehgal and Helen. According to him, it was one of the most fulfilling experiences of his career.

Bhansali believes that kind of emotional connection on film sets doesn’t exist anymore. “Today, it’s all professional — and I’m okay with that. Times have changed,” he added.

Lastly, when asked if he would remake Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, he said no. He wouldn’t change anything about it, though he might consider remaking Khamoshi to restore its original ending. Otherwise, he prefers to leave his stories as they are.
