The Ministry of Power has announced a big step toward modernising India’s power sector. A new task force has been set up to develop the India Energy Stack (IES) – a digital platform designed to make energy services more efficient, transparent, and easy to access for both consumers and power companies.
What is India Energy Stack (IES)?

The IES will be like Aadhaar for electricity, offering a secure and standard digital system for the entire power sector. It aims to:
- Help manage India’s growing electricity needs.
- Support better use of renewable energy like solar and wind.
- Make power services more consumer-friendly.
- Improve the working of electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs).
Key Features of the India Energy Stack:
- Every consumer, asset (like meters), and energy transaction will have a unique ID.
- Data will be shared securely and only with the user’s permission.
- Open APIs (software tools) will allow different systems to connect and work together.
- Encourages innovation and makes it easier for new companies to offer energy services.
Trial Phase and Future Plans:
To test how this works in the real world, a 12-month trial (Proof of Concept) will begin soon. This will be done with selected power companies and will use a tool called the Utility Intelligence Platform (UIP). UIP will give real-time insights to help utilities, policymakers, and customers make smarter energy decisions.
Who is Involved?
A special task force of experts from the fields of technology, energy, and regulations will:
- Guide the design of IES.
- Monitor the trial phase.
- Plan the nationwide rollout.
Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said this digital infrastructure is needed urgently to support India’s goals of becoming a $5 trillion economy and achieving net-zero emissions.
the India Energy Stack will do for electricity what Aadhaar did for identity and UPI did for digital payments—make it simple, fast, and accessible for everyone.
