India to Stick With Bumrah Rotation Plan, Gambhir Confirms No Change After First Test Loss

India isn’t panicking after their five-wicket loss to England. Head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that Bumrah will still play only three of the five Tests in the series.

From the start, India planned to manage Jasprit Bumrah’s workload. After spending months recovering from a back injury, Bumrah declined the Test captaincy to focus on staying fit. He returned strong in the first Test at Headingley, grabbing 5 for 83 in the first innings. However, he went wicketless in the second as India lost.

But the bigger plan? Still on.

“For us to manage Bumrah’s workload is more important,” Gambhir told reporters.
“We knew what he brings to the table. The decision was made before the tour — he’ll play only three Tests. We’ll decide which ones depending on his body.”

That means Bumrah is likely to miss two of the remaining four matches. That could leave India’s bowling attack looking a bit raw, especially against England’s aggressive batters. But Gambhir isn’t worried. He’s thinking long-term.

Trust in the Bench: Prasidh and Shardul Stay Backed

Young seamer Prasidh Krishna had a mixed outing — he took five wickets in the match but gave away runs. All-rounder Shardul Thakur got only two wickets and scored just five runs with the bat. Still, Gambhir backed them.

“Prasidh bowled really well. He got us important wickets. He’s got bounce and something different,” Gambhir said.
“Shardul bowled less because Jadeja was doing a solid job giving us control.”

The coach stressed that both bowlers will learn with experience. He isn’t pointing fingers — he wants the team to focus on consistency.

Big Picture Over Big Stats

India’s approach under Gambhir is clear: look beyond short-term setbacks. Bumrah is India’s pace spearhead. And keeping him fit matters more than squeezing out one more Test from him.

With the second Test starting July 2 in Birmingham, fans can expect more rotation in the pace department. But what remains constant is India’s belief in Bumrah — not just as a match-winner, but as a long-term weapon.
