A high-level team from India’s Commerce and Industry Ministry has arrived in Washington, D.C., for important trade discussions with the United States. The visit comes just before the August 1, 2025 deadline set by US President Donald Trump for imposing new tariffs on several countries, including India.
What’s Happening?
India and the US are working towards signing a temporary trade agreement, also known as an interim or mini trade deal. This deal aims to resolve differences, especially in key sectors like agriculture and automobiles. The talks are expected to start on Monday morning (US time) and continue for four days.

President Trump had earlier set a July 9 deadline for additional tariffs, but he extended it to August 1 to allow more time for discussions. Over the past week, Trump has warned more than 20 countries about possible new tariffs. However, India has not received such a notice, and Trump recently said the US is close to reaching a trade deal with India.
Who’s Leading the Talks?
- The Indian delegation includes senior officials from the Commerce Ministry.
- Rajesh Aggarwal, the Chief Negotiator and Special Secretary, will join the talks from Wednesday.
- A preliminary Indian team has already arrived to handle initial planning and set the agenda before the main negotiations begin.
What’s the Goal?
According to reports, the US may propose a tariff rate below 20% for India as part of the new deal. This is lower than the 26% rate announced earlier by Trump on April 2.

Both India and the US want to boost trade and economic cooperation. They are aiming to grow their bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. A formal Bilateral Trade Agreement is also in the works.
The United States is one of India’s biggest trading partners. American companies are also seeing India as a key market for their growth. Strengthening trade ties could lead to more jobs, better prices, and increased investment for both countries.
Indian and US trade officials have already held several meetings, and this new round of talks could bring them closer to a long-term agreement.
