The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has announced that it is stopping all academic partnerships with universities in Turkey. This decision comes after Turkey supported Pakistan during a recent military conflict with India.
IIT Bombay stated, “Due to the current geopolitical situation involving Turkey, we are suspending our agreements with Turkish universities until further notice.”

What Happened?
Recently, Turkey reportedly sent military help to Pakistan, including drones and soldiers, after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India. These drones, made in Turkey, were found in India after Pakistan used them in attacks. Also, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called Pakistan’s Prime Minister to show support. Turkey even sent six aircraft and a warship to Pakistan.
Because of this, many people in India are now calling for a boycott of Turkish products and services. This includes stopping partnerships with Turkish institutions.
Other Universities Follow
Before IIT Bombay’s decision, other universities like Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia had already taken action:
- JNU cancelled its agreement with Inonu University in Turkey, which was signed earlier this year. This agreement included student and faculty exchanges.
- Jamia Millia Islamia also stopped all academic work and collaborations with any Turkish institutions. The university said it was doing this for national security.
Private universities like Sharda University in Noida and Kanpur University also ended their partnerships with Turkish institutions. Sharda University cancelled agreements with Istanbul Aydin University and Hasan Kalyoncu University. Kanpur University said continuing these partnerships goes against the country’s priorities.
University of Delhi Also Reviewing
The University of Delhi is reviewing its own partnerships with Turkish universities. A senior official said they are carefully checking all agreements before making a final decision.
Boycott Beyond Education
The boycott is not just limited to education. Indian traders are refusing to sell Turkish goods. Some people are even cancelling their travel plans to Turkey. Online travel companies like EaseMyTrip and Ixigo have issued warnings about visiting Turkey and nearby countries.
