Infosys, India’s second-largest IT services company, has started sending warning emails to employees who work longer than the standard working hours. This action goes against the recent statement made by Infosys founder N.R. Narayana Murthy, who suggested that Indians should work 70 hours a week.
What’s Happening?
Infosys now uses an automated system to monitor how long employees work each day—especially those working from home. If someone works more than 9 hours and 15 minutes in a day, the system triggers an alert. Based on this data, the HR team sends detailed warning emails to those employees.
Why Is Infosys Doing This?
The company wants to prevent employee burnout and promote a better work-life balance. Infosys HR says while they value dedication, working too much can affect health and long-term productivity.
These emails also provide information like:
- The number of days an employee worked remotely
- The total number of hours worked
- The daily average working hours
Infosys also has a policy that requires employees to come to the office for at least 10 days a month, which started in November 2023.
What’s the Bigger Picture?
There is increasing concern in India’s tech industry about health problems, especially among young professionals. Issues like heart problems are being linked to poor eating habits, stress, and lack of rest.
So, Infosys is encouraging employees to:
- Take regular breaks during the workday
- Talk to their managers if they feel stressed or overwhelmed
This approach shows a shift in mindset in India’s IT sector—focusing more on employee health and sustainable productivity instead of pushing for very long working hours.
