After an eight-day break due to tensions at the border, the IPL has resumed. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal spoke to Reporters about what happened in Dharamshala on May 8, the challenges they faced, and how things got back on track so quickly.

Why did the IPL stop, and was it a tough decision?

Yes, it was a tough call, but the safety of everyone involved in the IPL was most important. There was no direct threat to the match venues, but the league was stopped as a precaution. The situation near Pathankot and nearby areas was tense, and many fans come to watch matches from those places. We didn’t want them to feel unsafe or panic. That’s why we avoided using police or security forces to clear the stadium. I personally spoke to the fans, and they showed great understanding.

There was a lot of uncertainty. We didn’t know when we could restart. Many players had already returned home. But we made a Plan B after talking to all involved — teams, sponsors, broadcasters. We also had to consider the early arrival of the monsoon and avoid matches getting cancelled due to rain. That’s why some match venues have changed. We’ve handled bigger challenges like COVID in the past. This was just another hurdle that we overcame.

Was postponing the IPL to a later date considered?

Yes, we discussed it. But since the international cricket calendar is full, it made sense to finish the IPL now. Overseas players also have their own schedules.

Why is resuming the IPL so important for its global image?

India is still one of the safest places for tourists and sports. Things were back to normal in just two days. Only a few areas faced problems. We’re also preparing to host the ICC Women’s World Cup later this year and the Men’s T20 World Cup early next year.

What about players not being available now?

Some players have national team duties, and we understand that. Since the league is now running a week longer than planned, not all players could return. But most are back, and the quality of cricket will remain high. There’s no pressure on any player to participate. Everyone has a good relationship with the BCCI and teams.

Is Cricket South Africa (CSA) not allowing its players to stay back?

We are in talks with CSA. They have the World Test Championship final from June 11, which is very important for them. We’ve asked them to allow players who aren’t in the final to stay in the IPL if they want to.

Conclusion:
Despite the temporary break, the IPL is back and running smoothly. With most players returning, the excitement and quality of the league are expected to remain as high as ever.
