Iran’s Currency Now Worth Almost Nothing—What Happens Next?

Trulli

As the rial plummets, Iranians scramble to protect their savings—but is there any relief in sight?

The Record Drop

Iran’s currency, the rial, has hit an all-time low, falling below 1,000,000 per U.S. dollar for the first time. According to Bonbast.com, it reached 1,039,000 rials to the dollar—a staggering drop from 55,000 rials in 2018. This drastic devaluation means the rial has lost more than half its value since President Masoud Pezeshkian took office last year.

The primary culprit? Renewed U.S. sanctions. Since Donald Trump returned to the White House, his “maximum pressure” campaign has tightened restrictions on Iran’s oil sales, cutting off vital foreign currency inflows. With inflation soaring at 40%, Iranians are desperately buying dollars, gold, or other hard currencies to safeguard their savings—further weakening the rial.

Tensions escalated when Trump sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warning about the nuclear program. Khamenei dismissed talks as “deception,” and Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi ruled out negotiations unless U.S. policies change. While Iran insists it’s prepared to avoid war, the standoff has left markets jittery.

What’s Next for Iran’s Economy?

With no end to sanctions in sight, the rial’s freefall may continue. Ordinary Iranians face skyrocketing prices, while the government struggles to stabilize the economy. The question remains: Can Iran find a way out, or will the crisis deepen?
