During Wednesday’s IPL match between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI), a strange event occurred when SRH’s Ishan Kishan walked off the field after facing a delivery from Deepak Chahar, even though there was no clear sign that the ball had hit his bat.
Kishan, who had just scored his first run in the previous over, tried to play a ball from Chahar that was drifting down the leg side. MI’s wicketkeeper, Ryan Rickelton, caught the ball, but neither Rickelton nor Chahar appealed for a caught behind. The umpire, Vinod Seshan, was about to signal a wide ball when, unexpectedly, Kishan walked off, suggesting he had edged the ball to the keeper. This led the umpire to raise his finger, declaring him out.

Despite a mild appeal from MI captain Hardik Pandya, who showed his support by patting Kishan on the helmet and shoulders, replay reviews showed there was no contact between the bat and ball. The UltraEdge system confirmed no spike when the ball passed Kishan’s bat.
Kishan’s unexpected dismissal left SRH in a difficult position at 9/2 in the third over, especially as they were already struggling in the tournament and facing favorable batting conditions.
