Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez want to get married in Venice, Italy. Their plan has split local opinion:
Mayor Welcomes the Couple
Venice’s mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, supports the wedding. He told reporters, “Jeff Bezos should be welcomed with open arms. Protesting against someone who brings attention and money to Venice is a shame. I feel embarrassed by those protests and hope Bezos still comes.”

Supporters Say the Wedding Helps the City
At the Venice Architecture Biennale, many visitors and officials agreed with the mayor.
- Jobs and income: A visitor from Berlin pointed out that a big wedding will hire many locals—waiters, water‑taxi drivers, hotel staff, and more. Guests and journalists will also spend money in restaurants and shops.
- Venice’s long history with big events: An American travel writer living in Venice noted that the city has always attracted lavish weddings and world‑famous visitors. She said Venice is both a historic cultural center and a popular party venue, and the city often seems unsure which identity to embrace.
Protesters Say “No Space for Bezos”
Not everyone is happy. A local group called “No Space for Bezos” hung a banner with an X through Bezos’s name on a bell tower. They posted on Facebook that Bezos is “not welcome in Venice or anywhere.” The banner was removed the next day, but it shows that some Venetians dislike the idea of a billionaire’s wedding in their city.
