The Kolkata B-school rape case has taken a disturbing turn. The main accused has confessed to spiking the woman’s drink before allegedly raping her in a boys’ hostel room. The victim had come to him for counselling. What happened next has shocked the entire city.
The accused, a student at a top management college in Kolkata, reportedly admitted to buying sleeping pills. He told police he mixed the pills in the cold drinks and water he gave the woman. This was during a one-on-one counselling session inside the campus.

“He spiked her drink, but he still can’t say why he did it,” a senior police officer told PTI. That is one of the most worrying parts—his silence on motive.
Once the woman consumed the drugged drinks, police say she was taken to a room in the boys’ hostel. That’s where the alleged assault took place. Later, the accused was seen walking outside the room. He even made a phone call to a friend and spoke about what happened, according to a Times of India report.
But the accused’s story is full of holes. Police say his statement keeps changing. Investigators have now formed a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to dig deeper. The SIT is led by an Assistant Commissioner.
The woman, who said she was a psychologist, couldn’t provide any valid proof of her profession. Police are also checking if she ever ran a clinic or issued any prescriptions. Still, that doesn’t change the facts of the case.
Medical reports back the woman’s claims. The accused has said the act was “consensual”, but the evidence does not support that. A police prosecutor confirmed this in court.
There are now whispers of outside pressure. Officers are checking if the woman’s family was forced to change parts of their statement. “We are trying to see if there was any money involved or if someone threatened them,” one officer said.
The accused, Mahaveer Toppannavar, also known as Parmanand Jain, was arrested on Friday night. He remains in police custody until July 19.
This case has brought up fresh fears about women’s safety on Indian campuses. The fact that the victim went to someone for help and was reportedly drugged and assaulted is deeply troubling.
