The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain in Kolkata and other districts of south Bengal from Wednesday to Friday this week. This is due to a low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal, expected to influence weather patterns starting from May 27.

The IMD has indicated that rainfall in the range of 7 cm to 11 cm is anticipated across the region during this period, which qualifies as heavy rain. A low-pressure system will develop over west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal by May 27, and its influence will trigger heavy rainfall in south Bengal, starting from May 28.
Sporadic Rain Expected Ahead of Low Pressure Formation
Before the heavy rain begins, Kolkata will experience sporadic showers coupled with gusty winds. The city’s sky will alternate between overcast and clear conditions, with temperatures ranging from 31°C to 34°C. The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and lightning activity from Sunday to Tuesday, as moisture from the Bay of Bengal continues to increase.
Preparations for Heavy Rain and Waterlogging
In anticipation of the heavy rain, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has been taking preventive measures to avoid waterlogging. A senior KMC engineer confirmed that catch pits and manholes are being cleared throughout the city to ensure that water flows freely during the downpour. Additionally, the performance of high-power pumps has been closely monitored, and no significant technical issues have been reported.
Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Expected
The Met office bulletin also mentioned that thunderstorms with gusty winds are likely between Sunday and Tuesday. These storms are expected to bring light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by lightning and potential disruptions in local weather. The maximum temperature for the next few days will remain between 31°C and 34°C, with the minimum temperature hovering around 25°C.
Previous Weather Conditions in Kolkata
On Saturday, Kolkata experienced a relatively pleasant day, with a maximum temperature of 32.6°C—2.8 degrees below the normal average. The city received 1.6 mm of rain during the day, and the absence of intense sunlight made the weather comfortable for residents. The sky briefly cleared late in the afternoon, offering a short respite before the upcoming rains.
As the week progresses, Kolkata and surrounding districts are bracing for heavy rainfall and the possibility of waterlogging, with the civic body staying vigilant to manage the city’s drainage systems effectively.
