Keeping your liver healthy is essential for overall well-being and for your body to function properly. So, how can you take care of your liver? Dr. Joseph Salhab, also known as Dr. GI Joe, a gastroenterologist with over 1.3 million followers on Instagram, has shared his morning routine to keep his liver healthy.

Here’s what Dr. GI Joe does each morning to take care of his liver:

  1. Start the Day with Lemon Water: Dr. GI Joe starts his day at 5:30 am with a glass of warm water and freshly squeezed lemon. He says, “This helps hydrate my body after fasting overnight and gives my liver a boost of Vitamin C, which can help get things moving in the digestive system.”
  2. Exercise for Liver Health: At 6 am, Dr. GI Joe works out for 45 minutes. He explains that exercise is important for liver health because it helps reduce the risk of fatty liver. Moving your body can also improve liver function.
  3. Coffee or Green Tea: After his workout, Dr. GI Joe drinks a cup of coffee, but instead of sugar, he adds cinnamon. He says that both coffee and green tea with jasmine help energize the liver and brain, thanks to caffeine and special antioxidants that protect the liver.
  4. Healthy Breakfast: For breakfast, Dr. GI Joe eats yogurt with berries, chia seeds, and honey. The yogurt is rich in probiotics and calcium, which are good for both the gut and liver. The berries are full of antioxidants, which help protect liver cells. Chia seeds give fiber and healthy fats, while honey sweetens the breakfast naturally and helps protect the liver with its flavonoids.
