Heavy rainfall in Mangaluru since Saturday afternoon has caused serious flooding in many parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for coastal Karnataka, including Dakshina Kannada district, warning of more rain.
Waterlogging in Mangaluru
Several low-lying areas of Mangaluru city are waterlogged. Roads under the Pumpwell flyover were completely flooded, causing traffic jams. A bus even broke down in one of the flooded areas, and passengers, along with locals, had to push it to the side.
Streets in Car Street, Lower Bendur, Kottara, and other nearby places were badly flooded. The Padil railway underpass and parts of Car Street also saw heavy waterlogging, making it hard for vehicles to move. Rainwater also entered many homes in low-lying residential areas.
Vehicle Restrictions on NH-66
Due to continuous heavy rainfall in coastal Karnataka, authorities have banned two- and three-wheelers from using a key stretch of National Highway-66 between Suratkal and Nantoor Junction in Dakshina Kannada.
This restriction was announced under Section 31 of the National Highways Act, 2002. These smaller vehicles must now use nearby service roads. The rule will remain in place until September 2025, during the ongoing monsoon season.
Officials said the constant rain over the past month has damaged parts of NH-66, making it unsafe for smaller vehicles. A speed limit of 50 km/h has also been imposed to prevent accidents. Drivers are urged to follow speed rules and traffic signs during the rainy season.
Heavy Rain Expected to Continue
Although IMD had earlier issued red alerts with light rainfall, Friday’s rain was much heavier. The red alert will remain in place across Dakshina Kannada district until the morning of June 16. Authorities have warned that heavy rain may continue and advised people to stay alert.
