Meta just made another big move in AI. It has acquired PlayAI, a voice cloning startup from California. The company builds tools that can create human-like voices. These voices can be used in apps, websites, and phone systems.
The deal was first reported by Bloomberg. The PlayAI team will join Meta in a few days and will report to Johan Schalkwyk. Johan himself came to Meta from another voice AI startup called Sesame AI.

This deal shows how serious Meta is about winning the AI race. They are building something called Superintelligence Labs to compete with other tech giants like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
Why PlayAI Matters
Voice cloning is becoming a huge trend. Tools like PlayAI can copy the way a person talks with scary accuracy. In 2023, a fake voice of actress Emma Watson reading Hitler’s Mein Kampf went viral. Before that, a music producer used AI voices of Drake and The Weeknd to create a track called Heart on My Sleeve. It became a hit on TikTok.
This tech is powerful. But it also brings risks. People can use it to fake someone’s voice without their permission. PlayAI does ask users to confirm they have the right to clone a voice—but there’s no system to check if that’s true.

Meta’s Big AI Push
Meta is not playing small. It is going all in on AI. In fact, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman said that Meta was offering $100 million bonuses to lure AI talent. And it’s working.
In recent weeks, Meta has hired:
- Nat Friedman (former GitHub CEO)
- Daniel Gross (ex-CEO of Safe Superintelligence)
- Ruoming Pang (ex-Apple AI lead)
- Trapit Bansal (ex-OpenAI researcher)
- Shuchao Bi (ex-Google, helped launch YouTube Shorts)
These are big names. Meta is clearly building a top-tier team to power its AI dreams.
What’s Next?
With PlayAI, Meta now has a strong voice AI tool in its pocket. The team will help Meta build better AI tools for speaking, chatting, and more. It’s still unclear how Meta will use PlayAI—but one thing is clear: AI voice tech is the next frontier.
As voice cloning becomes more common, the world will have to ask tough questions about ethics, safety, and privacy. But for now, Meta has made its move. The voice wars have officially begun.
