Meta is getting serious about glasses. Not just stylish ones—but smart ones.

The tech giant has bought a stake worth $3.5 billion (around €3 billion) in EssilorLuxottica, the world’s biggest eyewear company. That’s just under 3% of the Franco-Italian group. The news came via Bloomberg on Tuesday, and it’s already making waves in the stock market.

EssilorLuxottica is the company behind Ray-Ban, Oakley, and luxury eyewear lines for Prada, Versace, and Armani. It’s a true eyewear empire. Meta’s move shows this is not about fashion. It’s about the future of smart wearables powered by AI.

Smart Glasses Are the Next Big Thing

Meta has been quietly pushing smart glasses into the mainstream. It started with Ray-Ban Meta glasses—and they’re a hit. Over 2 million units were sold just four months after launch in October 2023.

Last month, Meta launched Oakley Meta glasses, made for athletes and outdoor users. These aren’t gimmicks. These glasses come with AI, built-in cameras, speakers, and real-time voice assistants.

By teaming up with EssilorLuxottica, Meta is doubling down. This is not just a partnership anymore. It’s a deeper bet on the future.

Why EssilorLuxottica Matters

If you’re building smart glasses for the world, you want to work with the best. And that’s EssilorLuxottica. They own the biggest brands, the best design teams, and the biggest distribution network in eyewear.

Their experience in fashion and optics, combined with Meta’s AI and tech muscle, could be a game-changer. Think of it as Apple + Nike + ChatGPT on your face.

Meta is even looking to raise its stake to 5%, but that’s still uncertain.

The Market Reacts

After the news broke, shares of EssilorLuxottica (traded as ESLOF and ESLOY) jumped by 7%. Even rival Warby Parker saw a 4.3% bump.

It’s clear the market sees this as more than just a small investment. It’s Meta placing a big bet on where tech is going—right on your face.

Meta wants to lead the AI race. But it’s not just about software. It’s about how we use AI in daily life. Smart glasses are the next big step—and with EssilorLuxottica by its side, Meta just got a lot closer.

This isn’t just a tech story. It’s a lifestyle shift. Watch this space.
