Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, is planning a big change in its virtual and mixed reality plans. Instead of continuing with its bulky VR headsets like the Quest 4, Meta may launch a brand-new lightweight headset called “Puffin” by the end of 2026, according to a report by UploadVR.
What Is Puffin?
The Puffin headset is expected to look more like a large pair of glasses rather than a heavy VR helmet. It will weigh just 110 grams, which is much lighter than the Quest headsets we know today.

To keep it light, Meta plans to move heavy parts like the battery and processor to a small external device called a “compute puck”, which you can carry in your pocket.

Key Features:
- No controllers – It will use eye tracking and hand gestures for control, making it more natural to use.
- Runs on HorizonOS, the same system used in Quest headsets.
- Focus on productivity and entertainment, not just games.
This headset will allow you to use tools for work, watch videos, and do video calls, instead of just playing VR games.
No More Quest 4?
Meta has reportedly cancelled its plans for the next Quest headsets, including the “Pismo Low” and “Pismo High” models. Another headset, “La Jolla,” once expected in 2027, has also been shelved. So for now, Puffin could become Meta’s main mixed reality device for the future.
Puffin vs. Ray-Ban Smart Glasses
Meta already sells Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, but those are more for taking photos and videos, listening to music, and using voice assistants. They don’t have screens and can’t show digital content in your view.
In contrast, the Puffin headset is being designed for a true mixed-reality experience. It will have built-in displays, allowing you to interact with digital elements in your real-world surroundings.

Conclusion
Meta is still working on the final design and has not yet decided on the type of display Puffin will use. But if everything goes as planned, the Puffin headset could launch before Apple’s next Vision headset and become a big step forward in mixed-reality technology.
