MG SUV Spotted Testing: Is Toyota Fortuner Finally Facing a Real Threat in India?

MG SUV

MG is revving up for a big play in India’s SUV market. A new MG SUV, likely codenamed the Majestor, was recently spotted testing on Indian roads without camouflage. And from what we’ve seen, MG may be gearing up to take on none other than the mighty Toyota Fortuner.

What Does This Mean for Indian Car Buyers?

For years, the Toyota Fortuner has ruled the premium SUV segment. It’s reliable, rugged, and has built a strong fanbase. But a new challenger from MG could change everything—especially if it brings similar power and features at a more competitive price.

That means more choice for Indian families, business travelers, and SUV lovers—and possibly, better deals across the board.

The Road Test: MG’s Mystery SUV Goes Public

Auto-enthusiast forums lit up this week when spy shots of the MG SUV testing in India surfaced online. The vehicle looked production-ready, hinting at an imminent launch. While MG hasn’t confirmed the final name for India, global cues suggest the Majestor (or something similar) could be what we see here.

MG is no stranger to localizing models and names for different markets. So, while the name might change, the mission is clear: take on the big dogs.

A Serious Fortuner Challenger?

Let’s be honest—breaking into the Fortuner’s territory isn’t easy. It’s the default choice for many premium SUV buyers in India. But MG seems ready for a fight. Here’s what we might expect:

  • Massive Presence: This new MG SUV will likely be a full-size, 7-seater model. Think wide shoulders, bold grille, high ground clearance.
  • Diesel Power: A strong diesel engine is almost guaranteed. MG might also offer a turbo-petrol variant for urban buyers.
  • Tech & Comfort Galore: Expect premium leather interiors, a large infotainment display, panoramic sunroof, connected car tech, and Level-2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).
  • Smart Pricing Strategy: MG could undercut the Fortuner slightly in pricing while packing in more features—a classic MG move.

Why This Could Shake Up the SUV Market

The premium SUV space in India is getting crowded. With brands like Jeep, Skoda, and now MG targeting the segment, Toyota will feel the heat. For the average car buyer, that’s a win.

Also, MG’s past launches—like the Hector and Gloster—have shown that Indian buyers love feature-rich vehicles that offer value for money. If the Majestor (or whatever it ends up being called) follows the same path, it could attract a large number of Fortuner-intenders.

As Autocar India recently noted, this new model is expected to debut in late 2025 or early 2026, just in time for a market hungry for new options.

A Word to Fortuner Fans

The Toyota Fortuner is a beast—no question. But even giants can be challenged. The arrival of MG’s SUV means that Toyota might have to rethink its pricing or upgrade its feature list to stay ahead.

And let’s face it: competition breeds better cars.

Final Thoughts

As an Indian auto enthusiast, this is the kind of launch that excites me. Not just because it’s shiny and new—but because it shakes the status quo. It pushes everyone to do better, give more, and treat buyers like the kings and queens we are.

The upcoming MG SUV might just be the disruption the premium SUV market didn’t know it needed. Stay tuned—this road is about to get bumpy (in the best way).
