The IPL 2025 match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) today at Wankhede Stadium is more than just a game. It could decide the final playoff spot. But there’s a big challenge: rain. The weather forecast is not exactly friendly.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, Mumbai faces a yellow alert for rain on Wednesday, 21 May. AccuWeather backs this up, warning of an 80% chance of rain with possible heavy thunderstorms in the morning and late at night. So, fans are biting their nails.

But here’s the twist: the IPL 2025 playing conditions have been tweaked to fight the rain delays. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has granted two hours of extra time for league matches, doubling the usual one-hour allowance. This change was made partly because of the late start to the season and the monsoon setting in early.

What does this mean? Matches can start as late as 9:30 PM instead of 7:30 PM without losing overs. Before, if the game hadn’t started by 8:30 PM, overs would be cut. Now, that cut-off is pushed much later, giving teams more breathing room.
Plus, the minimum five-over game cut-off has moved from 10:50 PM to 11:56 PM for evening games. So even if rain interrupts the match, there’s a better chance it will still reach a result.
Despite worries, the BCCI decided to keep the MI vs DC game in Mumbai. Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal had requested moving the venue to avoid rain spoiling their playoff chances. But the board stuck to the original plan, confident the new rules will help finish the game.
So, what can fans expect? A possible late start, some nail-biting rain breaks, but hopefully a full game. The tweaks are a clever move by the BCCI, given the IPL’s tight schedule and the pressure on teams to secure playoff spots.
It’s a small but important example of how cricket and monsoon seasons in India battle each other each year. Fans, players, and officials all hope the rain stays just a drizzle and not a downpour.
