Former Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has openly criticized the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for pressuring overseas players to come back and complete the IPL 2025 season.
This came after the tournament was paused due to the recent India-Pakistan conflict and rescheduled to end nearly two weeks later than planned.

The IPL final, originally set for May 24, is now pushed to June 3. This new schedule clashes with other international cricket commitments, especially for players from Australia and South Africa, who are preparing for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. Johnson, a two-time IPL winner, said he would never risk returning to India under such circumstances.
For cricket fans in India and across the world, the IPL is a massive event full of excitement and passion. But the safety of players must always come first. Johnson’s comments highlight a tough reality: players are caught between their passion and professional obligations, and their personal safety.

Johnson said in a column for The Western Australian, “If I had to make a call whether to head back to India and finish the tournament, it would be an easy decision. It’s a no from me. Lives and safety are the most important thing, not paying cheques.” This echoes what many feel — no game is worth risking lives.
The former pacer also pointed out the difference in approach between South Africa and Australia. South Africa has urged its players to return by May 26, showing a firmer stance. Meanwhile, Cricket Australia has left the decision up to individual players. Johnson found this surprising given the financial ties between India and South Africa through the SA20 competition.
A Big Impact on Test Cricket
The IPL’s rescheduling also affects player preparation for the ICC World Test Championship final. With just a week between the IPL final and the WTC final starting at Lord’s, players will have little time to switch focus. Johnson called this “a big issue,” emphasizing the importance of the WTC final as the “showpiece” of Test cricket.
A Message to the BCCI
From an Indian perspective, the IPL is a jewel of Indian cricket, a celebration that brings the nation together. But cricket is more than just business. It’s about pride, passion, and safety. Pressuring players to come back under such uncertain conditions is unwise and unfair.
Johnson’s call for the IPL and the Pakistan Super League to either end or move their tournaments is a wake-up call. It reminds us that the world watches how India handles its sports, especially during sensitive times.
Mitchell Johnson’s clear message is that player safety and well-being must come before money or schedules. India, with its vast love for cricket, should lead with caution and care.
