During the Islamic month of Muharram in the year 1447 AH (June-July 2025), more than 60 million worshippers visited the two holy mosques in Saudi Arabia — the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah.
According to the General Authority for the Two Holy Mosques, about 27.5 million people visited the Grand Mosque in Makkah. Out of them, nearly 7.9 million performed Umrah (a special pilgrimage), and around 47,800 prayed in a very sacred area called Hateem (Hijr Ismail).

In Madinah, the Prophet’s Mosque saw about 21.6 million visitors. Over 1.1 million people prayed in a very special place inside the mosque called Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifah, which is believed to be one of the gardens of Paradise. More than 2.1 million people also came to pay their respects to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions.

Why Are These Two Mosques So Important?
- Spiritual Center of Islam: The Grand Mosque in Makkah has the Kaaba, the direction Muslims face when they pray. The Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah holds the mosque and tomb of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
- Place of Blessings: Praying in Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifah in Madinah is considered very special and rewarding.
- Saudi Leadership: The kings of Saudi Arabia are called the “Custodians of the Two Holy Mosques,” showing their duty to protect and serve these holy places.
- Service is Worship: Saudi Arabia continuously improves facilities and services for pilgrims as a spiritual duty.
In Muharram 2025, millions of pilgrims showed their strong faith by visiting these holy sites. Saudi Arabia’s efforts ensure that all visitors can worship peacefully and with respect. These mosques remain a powerful symbol of Islam and a sign of the Kingdom’s commitment to the Muslim world.
