The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has introduced a new rule that requires approval for any spending over $50,000. This approval must come from a group called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is overseen by Elon Musk.

According to the EPA’s guidance, any contract, grant, or financial agreement over $50,000 must be reviewed by a member of the DOGE team. EPA staff must submit a one-page explanation of the expense daily between 3 PM and 6 PM Eastern time, along with other required paperwork.

Why Is This Happening?

President Donald Trump created DOGE to identify and reduce unnecessary government spending. He believes federal agencies waste money and wants them to make cuts where possible. However, if agencies don’t cut enough, Musk’s team will step in to reduce spending further.

Criticism of the New Rule

Not everyone is happy with this decision. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, a top Democrat on the Senate’s environmental committee, says this will slow down important work at the EPA, such as:

  • Air and water quality monitoring
  • Buying lab equipment
  • Hazardous waste cleanup
  • Recycling programs

Whitehouse is also concerned that Musk’s team is not qualified to oversee environmental spending and might interfere inappropriately with decisions that require expert knowledge.

Impact on EPA Funding

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin wants to cut the agency’s budget by 65%. He believes the EPA does not need as much money as it currently receives. This includes climate-related grants authorized under a 2022 law, such as $20 billion for a green bank that funds clean energy projects.

Zeldin and Trump’s team say their goal is to cut waste and save taxpayer money. However, environmental groups and federal employees warn that major budget cuts could weaken the EPA’s ability to protect public health and the environment.
