Big changes are coming to UPI from August 1, 2025. If you use apps like GPay, PhonePe, or Paytm, you must know these new UPI rules. The goal is simple — make the system faster, safer, and more stable for everyday users.
Let’s break down what’s changing and how it affects you.

1. Balance Check Limit: Only 50 Times a Day
Starting August 1, you can check your account balance only 50 times a day from one UPI app. NPCI made this rule to reduce server traffic and speed up transactions.
Why?
- It cuts down unnecessary balance checks
- It improves UPI speed
- It helps avoid app slowdowns
2. View Bank Accounts: Max 25 Times a Day
Now, you can view your linked bank accounts only 25 times a day through UPI. This limit helps reduce API load and keeps the system running smooth.
Why?
- It prevents too many server calls
- It boosts app efficiency
- It gives you a smoother experience
3. AutoPay Time Slots Are Changing
AutoPay transactions (like bill payments or subscriptions) will now happen only during non-peak hours:
- Before 10 a.m.
- Between 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- After 9:30 p.m.
Why?
- To avoid traffic during peak hours
- To keep regular payments running without delay

4. Failed Transaction Status: Check Only 3 Times a Day
You can now check the status of a failed transaction just three times a day, with at least 90 seconds gap between each check.
Why?
- To lower server load
- To increase chances of success in retries
- To make the system more reliable
5. Banks and UPI Apps Under Strict Watch
NPCI has told all banks and UPI apps to keep their API usage in check. If they break the rules, they could face penalties, restrictions, or even bans on adding new users.
6. Name Confirmation Before Payment
Since June 30, UPI apps now show the name of the person you’re paying before you hit send. This helps you avoid sending money to the wrong person.
Do You Need to Do Anything?
Nope. All these updates will roll out automatically. You don’t have to change any settings in your app.
Why Are These New UPI Rules Important?
These changes make the system:
- Faster
- More secure
- Better prepared for India’s massive user base
With over 350 million Indians using UPI daily, it’s time to streamline the process and cut down on the unnecessary load.
The new UPI rules aren’t scary. They’re here to make sure that your payments are faster, safer, and smoother. Less lag. More peace of mind.
