In a deadly suicide attack in North Waziristan, Pakistan, at least 16 soldiers lost their lives and over two dozen people were injured, including civilians and children. The incident happened on Saturday when a suicide bomber drove a vehicle filled with explosives into a military convoy.

A local government official, who spoke anonymously, confirmed the death toll had risen from 13 to 16. A police officer from the area said the powerful blast also damaged nearby houses, causing the roofs of two homes to collapse and injure six children.

The suicide bombing was claimed by the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group, a faction of the Pakistani Taliban.

Violence has been on the rise in Pakistan’s border areas with Afghanistan since the Taliban took control of Kabul in 2021. The Pakistani government blames Afghanistan for allowing terrorists to use its land to plan attacks, but the Taliban denies this.

According to reports, nearly 290 people—mostly security personnel—have been killed in attacks by armed groups in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan so far this year.
