PayPal has just announced something big. The global payments giant is teaming up with India’s UPI (Unified Payments Interface) to launch a new platform called PayPal World. This new system will let users make cross-border payments directly to businesses, using their local payment methods — and yes, that includes UPI.
UPI is not just any payment system. It powers 85% of all retail digital payments in India. If you’ve ever paid for chai or an Uber ride with your phone, chances are it was UPI. Now, thanks to this partnership, Indian users may soon be able to use UPI on global platforms like PayPal.

What is PayPal World?
PayPal World is a new payment platform aimed at connecting different countries’ payment systems. The goal is to make global payments simple, fast, and smooth. Whether you’re a small business owner in Brazil or a freelancer in Delhi, PayPal World could help you get paid without borders.
To build this, PayPal is partnering with big names:
- NPCI (the body behind UPI)
- Mercado Pago (from Brazil)
- Tencent’s WeChat Pay (China)
More partners are expected to join soon.

UPI Goes Global
“This is a big step for UPI,” said Ritesh Shukla, CEO of NPCI International Payments. And he’s right. UPI was made in India, for India. But over time, it’s started popping up in other countries too — like Singapore, UAE, and France. Now, with PayPal’s help, UPI could soon be part of a global payment revolution.
India is also working with Africa and South America to help them build similar systems using the UPI model. It’s fast, cheap, and reliable — and that’s exactly what growing economies need.
What’s Next?
PayPal World is expected to launch later this year. Once live, it will make it easier for people to pay and get paid across borders. Indian startups, freelancers, and businesses will likely benefit the most.
For PayPal, this is a smart move. Tapping into India’s booming digital economy opens up new markets and adds millions of potential users.
For India, it’s a proud moment. The world is finally seeing what “Made in India” can do.
This isn’t just about payments. It’s about India becoming a digital leader on the world stage. UPI is no longer just a local tool. It’s India’s biggest tech export — and now, PayPal is helping take it worldwide.
